EVs have failed before

I'm reading a book about Rudolf Diesel and his engine and learned about the electric vehicles that a taxi company used in New York City in the early 1900s. They all failed due to battery acid leaks and a short 50-mile range. 

I also learned about how Henry Ford and Thomas Edison worked together to build electric cars. They failed due to costs; the electric vehicles cost consumers $3000+ each where the combustion-engine vehicles cost consumers $500+ each.
